The maps are really an attempt to portray these sins with related real world data. I haven’t found the original article by Kansas State yet, but I can guess that lust=STD rate, greed=robbery/theft statistics, gluttony=obesity rate, and so on. It should not to be taken seriously (or too seriously specifically by the mass media).
