Relationships: Dating the Restaurant Industry

The Good:

Learning: Since I’ve been dating him, obscure food words that I had some knowledge of has now been everyday words. These words including: garde manger, chef de partie, covers, poissonier, tournant, sous-vide, batonnet, needling meat, veloute…etc.

Patience: I’m learning but the restaurant industry still sucks. Returning home at 3am? Really?! I pretty much have to live on a week of 5 minute conversations on a daily basis until he has a day off. Yes, a day.

The Bad:

Assumptions: Dating a chef means that he cooks for me all the time. This is totally wrong. The only thing he’s cooked for me are omelets and sandwiches, including these bruschetta like things — it was a garde manger inspired experiment gone wrong. Pesto hummus with picked vegetables? Ugh.

More assumptions: Getting comped with free food and booze at the restaurant. Maybe sometimes. However, one time I got really mad at him but still went to the restaurant for brunch the next day (by myself, at the bar of course). He sent out chocolate gelato as a brunch dessert to apologize. Hmm..maybe I should be mad at him more often…
