Sugar Cookies II (Inauguration Edition)

Well, it IS red, white and blue… Read the recipe after the jump!

  • 2 c. all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 tsp. baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp. baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 c. vegetable shortening
  • 3/4 c. sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 3 tbsp. milk

Preheat the oven to 375°F. Sift 2 cups flour, 1/2 teaspoon baking powder, 1/2 teaspoon baking soda and 1/4 teaspoon salt into medium bowl. In another bowl, cream 1/2 cup shortening and 3/4 cup sugar. Beat in 1 egg and 1 teaspoon vanilla. Mix in dry ingredients alternately with milk, beginning and ending with dry ingredients. Line 2 cookie sheets with unbleached parchment paper. Roll out the dough and cut using a cookie or biscuit cutter. Transfer dough rounds to prepared cookie sheets. Gather and re-roll scraps. Cut additional cookies and add sprinkles.
