Missing Things

The little things I miss about New York:

  • Russ & Daughters breakfasts
  • Brunch and post-brunch drunk shopping (yeah, there’s brunch everywhere in the country but it’s just slightly different in New York)
  • Laying out in the sun at Central Park, drinking cheap wine
  • The crazies on the subway
  • Wednesday evening wren-quilas with friends (Wednesdays used to be known as “Wrenning” days)
  • Restaurant hopping on date nights with Chef — restaurants just aren’t open very late in Minneapolis
  • Getting PBR and a shot of whiskey, and throwing peanut shells on the floor at Rodeo
  • Having that morning coffee at the Ace Hotel lounge
  • My stylist from Soon Beauty Lab — I never got to find out how her last date went
  • Being able to do all my errands and groceries in one day and/or using only one subway line (and in New York, I could hit up all of the best places in the country)
  • The Jazz Age lawn parties in the summer— sometimes Bill Cunningham shows up and I wish I had the guts to ask for a picture with him

I do miss my life in New York a lot and it’s enough to question where and what home is for me, and what that even means.

“New York City is not hospitable. She is very big and she has no heart. She is not charming. She is not sympathetic. She is rushed and noisy and unkempt, a hard, ambitious, irresolute place, not very lively, and never gay. When she glitters she is very, very bright, and when she does not glitter she is dirty. New York does nothing for those of us who are inclined to love her except implant in our hearts a homesickness that baffles us until we go away from her, and then we realize why we are restless. At home or away, we are homesick for New York not because New York used to be better and not because she used to be worse but because the city holds us and we don’t know why.”
