Very good cooks who are employed as ‘chefs’ rarely refer to themselves as ‘chefs.’ They refer to themselves as ‘cooks.’

— Alton Brown. [Very true since a lot of chefs are very touchy about the use of the title (example here), especially when a cook has never worked his/her way up the brigade de cuisine but calls himself/herself a chef. Another Alton Brown quotable: “The worst food you’ll ever eat will probably be prepared by a ‘cook’ who calls himself a ‘chef.’ Mark my words.”]
