Sandy, You B*tch

If you live on the East Coast, I hope you’re okay. The stories about the floodings, deaths, evacuations, 911 calls, and power outages are scary and crazy. As reported by Mother Jones before the hurricane hit, I do wonder how much of an impact Sandy will have on Election Day especially when it comes to Medicare and FEMA, now that both issues have been brought to light (again — did you see how many times this tweet was retweeted?). I guess we’ll have to see what happens in the next couple of days.

Politics aside, it’s awesome to hear that some NYC restaurants were okay and some are even open for service tonight! I’ve read about the damages to the various restaurants in the five boroughs and I’ve also heard the sad anecdotes from Chef’s restaurant friends. With the amount of time needed before some of these places can even open (specifically due to the power outages and clean-up), it’s scary to think about the cost of the damages especially for the small businesses that are already pretty cash strapped. Things will be back to normal soon. It is New York after all.

P.S. In this economy, I understand how important it is to keep a business open and that every penny counts, but I do not understand some of the business practices that happened during the storm: Ordering delivery during Sandy? Seriously? Why were these businesses open when the subway, tunnels, and bridges were shut down? Why would you risk people’s lives? Service industry folks have friends and family too.
